New song teaser - “Plans”!
Here’s a rough recording of the song that I mentioned I was working on while riding the T and listening to the guitar parts I recorded a couple weeks ago and put on my iPhone. It’s tentatively called “Plans,” and it’s close enough to being done that I’ll leave any other changes as a mystery until the full length album comes out.
Oh, and I really like this song. Haha worst case scenario, I’m gonna keep listening to it a lot.
——————————————
Just want to laugh about it. Who wants to talk about what matters, after all? But I wasn’t kidding when I said I thought I saw smoke. And we could probably spend our days all making plans, but what would it mean? I’ve been told what becomes of the best laid plans of mice and men. But what about the half laid plans? The bulk of them? I bet there’s something there. Yeah.
Just want to laugh about it. Who wants to talk about what matters, after all? Like how much should I care what my future self might think about the choices that my present self is making all the time? Oh, won’t you tell me, brother? Tell me — I just can’t reason it out. Just want to laugh about it. Who wants to talk about what matters, after all? You know, I wasn’t kidding when I said I thought I saw smoke. And we could probably spend our days all making plans, but what would it mean? I’ve been told what becomes of the best laid plans of mice and men. But what about the half laid plans? The bulk of them? I bet there’s something there. Lain it on the line, you know you could have lain it on the line. Wait, is that right? Please excuse me right now I think I’ve got to go. I think I’ve got to go. And maybe I’m not the me I was five years ago, but I’m pretty close, and I’m pretty sure that he meant well. Here’s a token of gratitude for all the latitude that he has given me, but it was rather rude not to have thought of me — wait, but I’m part of me.
We’ve got a just cause, just because I really think, oh yeah, we’ve got ourselves, we’ve got a New Rochelle, a New Rochelle, yeah. We’ve got a just cause, just because I really think, oh yeah, we’ve got ourselves, we’ve got a New Rochelle, a New Rochelle, yeah.
I’ll be making an appearance on UNregular Radio — http://unregularradio.com/ — on Aug. 11 at 2pm!
It’ll be part of The Boston Local Music Show — http://www.thelocalmusicshow.com/ — an awesome “twice-weekly live streaming online radio show featuring exclusively the best local music from New England.”
I’ll be playing a few songs and promoting my show on Aug. 13 at Precinct in Somerville, MA. It’ll be the first show with a full backing band, should be awesome!
So….yeah I’m pretty excited. Movin’ on up! One last thing — if you:
1) want to be reminded about this stuff and more
2) aren’t the kind of person who checks social media much (but then how are you reading this???)
and 3) would like a free MP3 of “The King of Wales”
please consider joining my mailing list! — http://cowgill.fanbridge.com/
Gonna try a new songwriting strategy today —
I just used GarageBand to quickly record the chord progressions for two major parts of the song I’m working on. I made mp3s of them, and put them on my iPhone. Now I’m gonna take a book with blank pages and a pen, and go ride the T to meet a friend to go rock climbing (but it’s a long T ride with a connection). I’m gonna listen to the guitar parts on repeat and then try writing some words as if they were raps, and put a melody to it at some point later.
Haha so futuristic of me.

Time for another lo-fi laptop recording of one of the songs of my next album, which I’m looking to release in early 2012!
Red Carpet
You really rolled out the red carpet this time.
I rolled over in my grave, and I ain’t even dead.
You really reached for the stars, woah, this time.
I’m planted and looking for water in the soil to get my feet wet.
And I would have liked to walk on your pulp fiction throwback
To old-fashioned notions of navigating the puddles.
I would have liked to touch on the subject of touching the
Object of my affection, who come to think of it, happens to be —
You showed me the shape of a woman this time,
And I knew that it was not the bathroom I sought.
You showed me your hand, and I knew not to walk. You tortured my ears, and I knew it was chalk.
But what of the children who lay there asleep?
And I would have liked to walk on your pulp fiction throwback
To old-fashioned notions of navigating the puddles.
I would have liked to touch on the subject of touching the
Subject of my affection, who come to think of it, happens to be
You, you, you.
Free refills he says, free refills he says.
Children are you listening, what part of this did you think was free?
Free refills he says.
Children are you listening, what part of this did you think was free?
Free your, free your mind.
What part of this did you think was
Free? Oh yeah.
You really rolled out the red carpet this time.
And I rolled over in my grave, I rolled over in my grave and I, and I,
Ain’t even dead. Woah no. Oh no.
Woah.
The Best Day of the Week
This is an old recording from about two years ago, and the beginning part is a joke song / jingle my roommate Dennis Lee and I made up in college. But it always cheers me up, especially when looking forward to the weekend, so I thought I’d share it.

Check out a very rough, lo-fi recording of a new song I’m working on, “Fall”!
Haha I clearly failed at posting this song soon after posting the lyrics, as promised. I showed this version to a friend who pointed out one part in the final verse where the melody used to be slightly different….and better. But the idea with this blog was supposed to be to get people’s reactions early on before these songs are finalized on a full album. And it’d be no fun if I didn’t keep a few tricks up my sleeve for later.
$6 cover
My set is at 8:15pm!
The other acts are Tom Cadrin and Whiskee

Finally finished the lyrics for a new song I’ve been working on, “Fall”! I’ll try to get a lo-fi laptop recording posted tonight or tomorrow.
If you’re curious to see the lyrics, read on, but for me it always feels like something’s missing until you’re able to hear the cadence and everything.
The guitar part and melody have been set for several months now, so it feels great to finally get this one done.
Fall (Cowgill, May 2011)
What’s your name?
I know that face.
It’s not my fault you missed the train.
But I’ve been all locked up for days,
So to speak.
What’s your name?
I know that face.
Just inconsiderate, I’m afraid.
Though I’ve been all locked up for days,
You
See that I can’t live without you,
Fall, but I might think about when you,
Fall, in the road,
What the hell are you thinking?
Here again,
Must be my place,
No recollection what to say.
Or was it that I don’t say,
Anything?
There’s no one here,
I just need sleep,
If I could work these damn old keys,
Did you just hear me say,
Any-
Thing? Cuz I can’t live without you,
Fall, but I might think about when you,
Fall, in the road,
What the hell are you thinking?
And I’ve been low,
But I can’t even say I’m sorry for,
What I can’t, but I’ve been
In…
A slump. Mmm hmm.
For sure. Aww babe.
What’s your name?
I know that face.
It’s not my fault you missed the train.
But I’ve been all locked up for days,
So to speak.
What’s your name?
I know that face.
Just inconsiderate, I’m afraid.
Though I’ve been all locked up for days,
You
See that I can’t live without you,
Fall, but I might think about when you,
Fall, in the road,
What the hell are you thinking?
And I’ve been low,
But I can’t even say I’m sorry for,
What I can’t, but I’ve been
In!
See that I can’t live without you!
Fall! But I might think about when you,
Fall! In the road!
What the hell are you thinking?
What the hell are you thinking?
